Our Mission
The counseling team at Sunrise Elementary is committed to advocating for the amazing students in our school. We will remove barriers to success and provide guidance in academics, behavioral and social development, and career exploration. We are dedicated to creating an environment where students feel safe, supported and welcome. Sunrise students will develop strong interpersonal skills and a positive self-concept.
Together we RISE
The American School Counseling Association's (ASCA) National Model is changing the field of school counseling for the better. It is data-driven, preventative in nature, and drives the creation of a counseling program. The model's developmentally appropriate, culturally responsive and systemic framework allows school counselors to foster emotional, social, and academic achievements in students through collaborative efforts. The ASCA model recommends school counselors spend 80% of their time in direct and indirect services to the student in an effort to close the achievement and opportunity gaps.

The School Counselor and MTSS (Multi-tiered System of Supports)
MTSS is an evidence-based framework implemented in pre-K-12 schools that provides academic and behavioral instruction and intervention at tiered intensities to improve learning and social/emotional functioning in a way that works for every student. School counselors align their comprehensive counseling program with the MTSS model.
Why a Tiered framework?
Students learn and achieve at different levels!
Tier 1 is a "universal" approach, which means 80-90% of students will receive supports at this level. Tier 1 is focused on prevention! This is where the school counselor will spend a majority of their time. Instruction at this level might be class lessons on various social/emotional topics, parent information nights, or teacher support.
Tier 2 is a more targeted level for students who might need additional support. 10-15% of students in the school will benefit from and be at this level. Tier 2 is focused on prevention and remediation. Supports in this level will include small group and individual counseling and consultation and collaboration with school personnel, families, and stakeholders. Students in this level are often referred by parents, teachers, or through data collection (e.g. attendance or grades).
Tier 3 is the level with the most intensive supports. This will only be about 1-5% of students within the school. The school counselors job at this level is to provide supportive services to students and families through consultation, collaboration, and referrals to outside services. Often, school counselors can provide short-term counseling services (no more than 6-8 weeks), but after one or two sessions if the need is there, the counselor will refer out to mental health services. All of this is done with parent's permission.
